The
design principle of the project is to reuse the existing building
as much as possible by reassigning the areas while respecting its
nature and style, and to build extensions for the additional required
spaces in a different style.The contrast of the two styles intends
to show the history and evolution of the Alliance Francaise in Pretoria
who bought the property in 1985, with one dwelling house, believed
to have been designed by Sir Herbert Baker and outbuildings.

Through
time the Alliance’s activity has grown and it needs more classrooms
to continue to operate as an educational centre which provides classes/courses
in French. The project intends to answer the

Rehabilitate
the existing area without major works Demolish the two inappropriate
classrooms Refurbish the existing ablutions and expand the director’s
office. Build an extension in the courtyard including:
